Living with TMJ
Having TMJ can be frustrating and oftentimes people close themselves off from their friends and family because they do not want to explain their painful symptoms. Everyone handles TMJ differently and frequently the stress of TMJ makes their symptoms worse. For more information about living with TMJ symptoms and TMJ pain, visit our blog here.
Here are some tips we suggest to our patients to make life with TMJ easier:
Do not be embarrassed about having TMJ. Having an honest discussion with friends and family will help them understand your pain. Talking about the problem can alleviate the stress of hiding it.
Spend more time with your family and friends. Not only is it distracting but it will lift your spirits and help you relax. A lot of patients want to stay home and avoid social situations. This can be depressing and stressful. TMJ symptoms are worsened by stress so increasing your quality time with loved ones will help reduce that stress.
If you feel your friends and family are having a difficult time understanding your symptoms, be patient and explain to them how it affects your feelings.
Try yoga, medication, or even acupuncture to reduce stress. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and unwind. Just be careful when you are working out. Try not to grind your teeth, clench your jaw, and avoid sports/movement that could allow you to be hit in the face.
